Idris Nawaz memorized the Qur’an by the age of ten and, at twelve, took first place at the Qatar International Qur’an Competition — the first American to win an international Qur’an competition. He began his Alimiyyah studies at thirteen at Michigan Islamic Institute and completed them at Jamiah Binoria University in Pakistan, earning a master’s in Sharia and a second in hadith studies, and is completing a PhD in Islamic thought and philosophy at the International Islamic University of Malaysia. He teaches at Miftaah Institute and Michigan Islamic Institute and writes on hadith, education and bioethics. His paper for AMJA’s 22nd Imams’ Conference argues that an AI agent, however autonomous, is a sabab and never a mukallaf: an instrument, so the accountability stays with the human who deployed it.
