Habibi Tech Pickleball SocialPart of Habibi Tech Weekend

The night before the Summit, the community takes over a pickleball club in Red Hook. Open play, mixed teams, and an evening to talk to people properly — before anyone is standing at a microphone and before the day is a schedule.

What the evening is

A pickleball social, run the way a social is run rather than the way a tournament is. Teams are mixed as people arrive, courts turn over, and nobody is keeping a league table. If you have never picked up a paddle, that is the ordinary case here and not the exception.

The rest of it is the point. This is the same room as Saturday, a day early and without a stage in it — which turns out to be the difference between recognising somebody at the Summit and knowing them.

Open play at Velto Pickleball Club: four people mid-rally across the net.

Who is there

Everyone speaking on the Saturday is invited to all three weekend events, so a good part of the slate is here the night before they present. So is everyone else who came in early — the people flying in for the weekend rather than commuting to one day of it.

Red Hook is not on a subway line. The B61 runs down Van Brunt Street, and a car from Manhattan or from most of Brooklyn is fifteen to twenty-five minutes. Give yourself a little more than the map says on a Friday evening.
