Fireside

Future of Fiqh: Using AI to Issue Fatwas

Presented by Qalam Institute

Saturday, September 261:20 PM – 2:05 PMAl-Quds

About this session

Somebody in your community asked an AI a fiqh question this morning and acted on the answer. This fireside is about whether that should worry you, and what a seminary does about it. One speaker founded Qalam and teaches its fiqh and usul; the other graduated from it, built AI at Yaqeen, and now runs Qalam's technology. One holds the tradition, one holds the tools, and both take the question seriously.

Who this is for

Scholars, students of knowledge, imams, the technologists who serve them, and any Muslim who has already asked a chatbot something they would not ask their shaykh.

On the table

  • Can a model that has read every digitized fiqh text carry any of the trust that has always attached to a person?
  • Where does an assistant end and a mufti begin?
  • Who is answerable when the answer is wrong?

You'll leave with

  • A working sense of what these tools can honestly do and where the tradition draws the line
  • How a serious institution is choosing to build, and what it refuses to
  • Language for the conversation you will have with your own community about this

Speakers

September 26 at Civic Hall, New York. Sessions are added to the agenda as they are confirmed.
